The answer to this is very dependant on who is asking. I came across this at a fairly young age and this is what I decided. If a friendship or acceptance is dependant on me changing to be like the other person, is he/she worth it? How will someone's approval make-up for not being able to have my own say? Since then I have benefitted greatly from being true to myself. Actually, there is a whole group of people that would rather have a true friend.
Thanks Kathy for the comment, it's hard for me to know where to draw the line between being open-minded and open to other's suggestions and where it's just plane fear of rejection playing out in my life. I think you said it best, to keep true to yourself is the key.
